Hakkasan – 1 Michelin Star

February 2014

Chef: Tong Chee Hwee

‘Elegance, energy, invention’ is how Hakkasan describes itself on their website and it is difficult to disagree.

We visited the Hanway Place restaurant which is the original of the Hakkasan group – there are now several around the world. Tucked away down a side street behind an unassuming door you would hardly know the restaurant is there at all. They have obviously given the décor a lot of thought and inside the restaurant is all sleek, oriental elegance.

We started with some excellent cocktails (mocktails are also good here). I like the bar here it is slightly separate from the restaurant and I think is another example for good decor. Then to the food…we tried the Taste of Hakkasan menu which I would very much recommend as an inexpensive lunch or pre/post theatre dinner. Since our visit the menu has changed and the restaurant now offer a Taste of Hakassan for just £38, including a cocktail; a great deal.

What ever menu you try do have some dim sum. It is divine.

As a rule I rarely visit Chinese restaurants but this was definitely  worth a visit; it is so far removed from the Chinese cuisine I have tried previously.

In summary, this restaurant is a gem and I am glad to see them expanding elsewhere. I hope all Hakkasans are as good as Hanway Place because this is something special.
